Patricia Barragan Schreck, 95, entered into eternal rest on January 2, 2025. She was born at Telfair Hospital in Savannah on March 1, 1929, the fifth and last child of Lottie and Frank Barragan. She was the widow of Joseph C. Schreck and a lifelong resident of Savannah, GA. She attended local public schools (37th Street and Richard Arnold Junior High) and proudly graduated from St. Vincent’s Academy in 1946. At age 16 in February of 1946, she became the organist for the Cathedral Basilica of St. John the Baptist, thanks to the wisdom and foresight of Rector Msgr. T. James McNamara, her mentor. She remained the organist and choir director at the Cathedral for 66 years. Patty loved all of her choirs --- the Cathedral Men’s Choir, the Women’s Choir, the Savannah Catholic Deanery Choir, and the SVA Alumnae Chorus. She served as the Music Director at St. Vincent’s Academy where she taught church music and choral singing for 47 years. In 1945-46, she composed the St. Vincent’s Academy Alma Mater and in the mid-1960s, she wrote the St. Vincent’s Fight Song, both still sung by students today. In 1971, she initiated the beautiful choral Christmas Candlelight Service with her students in chorus, which continues as a St. Vincent’s Christmas tradition to this day. She trained hundreds of young women at St. Vincent’s to love singing Church music and music of all kinds. She directed two choruses while there --- The Chorale and Les Chanteurs.
During her lifetime, she received many honors for her contributions to the Church and to music in Savannah. Saint Pope John Paul II awarded her the Papal Medal “Pro Ecclesia Et Pontifice” for her service to the Church. The City of Savannah presented her the key to the City and a proclamation declaring “Patty Barragan Schreck Day” on May 31, 1981, and again on March 15, 1989, given by the Irish Community for her years of devotion to Irish music in Savannah. She was awarded the Benedictine Medal of Excellence in 1976 and in 1984 was one of the initial recipients of St. Vincent’s Academy’s highest honor, the McAuley Medal. In 1978, she was named one of Savannah’s “Outstanding Women of the Year” and was also named one of the “Outstanding Teachers of the Year” by the Georgia Association of Independent Schools. In 2000, she became one of the first recipients of the Catholic Diocese’s “Gartland Service Award” for her many years of dedicated, unprecedented service to the Church. In 2001, she was selected as the “Coastal Georgia Older Worker of the Year” from the Savannah area. In 2006, she was awarded the “Sister Mary Jude Walsh Award/Medal” for her loyalty, service, advocacy and devotion to the Sisters of Mercy and St. Vincent’s Academy. In August 2012, she retired as Organist at the Cathedral Basilica of St. John the Baptist, after 66 years of dedicated and devoted service.
Patty always said that the best thing that ever happened in her life was her marriage to Joseph Charles Schreck in 1950 --- her heart and her rock. They raised three children who greatly loved their parents. Joe was a devoted father and a supportive, proud husband of all of Patty’s music endeavors. He preceded her in death in 1993, after 42 years of marriage. She was also preceded in death by her parents Lottie and Frank Barragan; her two brothers James Barragan and Frank and his wife Ruth; her two sisters Elizabeth Barragan Bickers and her husband Charles, and Sister M. Fidelis Barragan, RSM (nee Nancy Barragan); and nephews Danny Bickers and Michael Barragan.
Loving recognition must be given to Irene Jackson for her constant care, companionship and love over the past six years (and beyond to Patty’s brother Frank Barragan), and to LaDalla George for her invaluable care on weekends.
She is survived by her daughter, Nancy Schreck of Savannah; and two sons, Rev. Msgr. Christopher J. Schreck, recently retired of the Catholic Diocese of Savannah and Rev. Msgr. J. Gerard Schreck of Savannah, Rector of the Cathedral Basilica of St. John the Baptist; several nieces and nephews; her life-long and dearest friend, Tillie Stacy; and her faithful canine companion, Squiggy.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 5:00 p.m. on Monday, January 6, 2025 at Cathedral Basilica of St. John the Baptist. A private burial for family and friends will be held on Tuesday, January 7, 2025 in Catholic Cemetery.
Remembrances may be sent to the Cathedral Basilica of St. John the Baptist, to St. Vincent’s Academy, Attn: Patty Schreck Music Scholarship Fund, or to Hospice Savannah.

She made music so much fun at St. Vincent’s and touched the lives of so many students. I learned valuable lessons about time management senior year after spending hours in Saturday detention for being late for music class on Wednesday before school (as I’m sure several others who read this can relate!). You will definitely be missed Mrs Schreck. Heaven has truly gained an angel. My sincerest condolences Nancy to you and your family. I’ll always hold fond memories of your mother during my time at St. Vincent’s.
- Sheila Clark Crossley, Savannah , GA
Singing in Patty Schreck’s choir was one of the most fun Christmas memories I have. She had an amazing sense of humor, and did her work for the love of music and her community around her. What a loss for the City and Diocese of Savannah.

It was my privilege to be in SVA Glee Club (1958-1961) & taught the music by Patty all of those years. Her instruction has been a priceless gift that prepared us for lifetimes of participation in Church music anywhere. Her special gift of liturgical music knowledge was passed to hundreds of us. Her kindness & generosity is unmeasured & most appreciated & unmatched. Please accept my deepest condolences & thanksgiving for having known her special soul. Patty Cannon Valenti

I was just thinking of Mrs. Schreck yesterday at church because I still remember the alto parts of the hymns she taught us at St Vincent’s, and I can still hear those harmonies in my head even though the congregation in church is not singing them. I am not a good singer, but I did love listening to the beautiful music and song at our SVA student masses and even participating. I’m happy to have known her; she is someone who clearly had a lasting effect in my life, and I’m sure for all who knew her. The family has my deepest condolences for their loss.
- Maureen Iannone Petrillo, Dacula, Georgia

A beautiful person who gave so much. May the angels led her to paradise. My condolences to Nancy, Gerry, Chis and all the family. Blessings and peace.
- Ann Pinckney, Savannah, GA
Patty was such a kind and positive soul. I will never forget her many kindnesses to me as a musician, but she was also kind to me on a personal level. One time when my first husband and I were having financial trouble and I was without a car, she lent me her husband's old car for over a month. It made all the difference in my ability to get to and from my job at Sacred Heart, and my ability to get my children to doctors' appointments, etc. I moved away from Savannah many years ago, but I still carry in my heart the lessons in kindness that I learned from her.
- Stacie (O'Connor) Court, Athens, GA
Dear Nancy, Msgr. Jerry, and Msgr. Chris, my deepest sympathies on the death of your mother, Patty. May her voice now be added to the choirs of angels.
- Fr. Jay Harrington, OP, Minneapolis, MN
Mrs. Schreck passed her love of music and singing to each of us students at St. Vincent's Academy, trying her best to lead us into song. She made it fun even for the least talented among us (guilty here) and harvested musical brilliance from the ones who could really carry a tune and deliver. Mrs. Schreck is one of the fondest SVA memories carried in my heart for over fifty years.
- Julia J Williams, SVA Class of 1973 , Isle of Hope, Georgia
My sincere thoughts and prayers on your loss. Patty Schreck was a one of a kind lady, the best. She will be sorely missed by all who knew her. Eternal rest grant unto her, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon her.
- Carolyn Yokum Beebe, Savannah, GA
Nan, Jerry and Chris, your Mother was the sweetest, kindest lady. She was still playing the organ when I worked at the Catherdal. Nan was my Bestie, shared lots of special moments with the two of them. I am sad, but also proud, she is in her heavenly home resting in peace. Wish I could be there for Nancy. Your all in my thoughts and prayers.

It is hard to put into words what this lady meant to the Catholic community of Savannah. My first introduction to Miss Patty was joining the Cathedral Day School choir. My love for Church music continued to be nourished thru her over the years. Her place in heaven secured, she will be and has been missed from the musical church scene greatly! For the family and especially my long time friend Nancy, condolences and prayers. RIP Mrs. Shreck
- Margie Tracy, Blairsville, Georgia
The last time that I spoke with Patty Schreck was to arrange the music for my dear Mother’s funeral at the Cathedral. She suggested “Gentle Woman”. That would be so appropriate for this sweet lady. Nancy Harris Gayhardt, SVA 1957, Annapolis, MD
- Nancy Harris Gayhardt, Annapolis, MD

Mrs. Schreck's commitments to her students and music were unparalleled. Her memory will continue on through her songs and her students' continued music appreciation. Requiescat in Pace.
- Seeger, Seattle, WA
Mrs. Schreck was my music director for the children’s choir. She moved me from a child soprano to a men’s 1st Tenor when one of the men needed to be replaced after decades of singing in the men’s choir. She had a way of persuasion that you couldn’t resist like always serving for Bishop Lassards mass then going up to the choir loft to sing my parts in the men’s choir. I will miss you, but I’m glad I knew you for most all of my Catholic school years and afterwards.
- Leamon Alexander Johnston, Rockmart, GA
My Daddy, sister, and brothers sang in the choir at the Cathedral, then it was my turn to join. I dearly loved every rehearsal all the way through school and after graduation. Words cannot express the joy Mrs Schreck shared with all of us. I had the pleasure of singing with the Chorale. I can only imagine how lovely Heaven’s choir must sound now that Mrs Schreck is singing among the angels. God love her; she will have a place in my heart always. Love and hugs to the family.
- Lyle, Mandeville , La
When Patty allowed me to join the Chorale at SVA, I was elated. It was the best part of my four years. Although I do not have a good voice (second Alto), singing in the Chorale was such a highlight for me. I knew Patty for my entire life and her kindness and enthusiasm were unfailing. My prayers for her and her family ... your mother was a fantastic lady.
- Peggy O'Leary Corcoran, Oak Island, North Carolina
Nancy, Chris and Gerry, Without a doubt, singing for Mrs. Patty Schreck was the highlight of my four years at St. Vincent’s. She expected only the best while directing us, and made it an absolute joy while doing so. My fondest memories come from the Irish music that has become a staple to many of us around St. Patrick’s Day. I have (very homemade) recordings of her Irish music and the Holland family gathers yearly to sing most of them. Thanks to her, we all know most of the words by heart. From the Marshal’s Reception, Celtic Cross Mass, Hibernian Luncheon and Mass on St. Patrick’s Day morning, Patty Schreck helped make St. Patrick’s Day the special season that it is here in Savannah. I am so grateful for those memories. Sending love and gratitude to the three of you for sharing your Mom and her music with all of us. May the Road Rise to Meet Her……☘️ -Jan
- Jan Holland Ethridge, Alpharetta, Ga
Oh Nance I am so saddened by the loss of your wonderful mom. I was one of thousands that she motivated and inspired to love music and performance, but more importantly life. She expected the best from her students while understanding imperfections…always straight talk with a light hearted humor and beautiful smile! She was a gift to all who knew her and especially to the Cathedral/St. Vincent’s Community. Your devotion to her in particular the last 6 years allowed her to live the fullest life. I will be thinking about you and the family…keeping you in my thoughts and prayers. With Love, Foge
- Kathleen Fogarty Higgins, Mt. Dora, Florida
To the Family of Mrs. Schreck: What a legacy she has left to Savannah and entire Catholic Community! Patty taught me music through 8 years at Cathedral Day School to 4 years of St Vincents. With all of her honors, Patty remained so humble. Also like the Mercy Nuns, she never forgot your name. God bless you, Patty. You will truly be missed

My heartfelt condolences to the entire---and extended---Schreck family. I moved to Savannah in 2012 and immediately joined the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist. I got to enjoy one year of Patty's musical direction. We loved all the same hymns! Mrs. Schreck was a treasure for the Catholic Church. She passed her great love for the Church to her children. Msgr. Gerry Schreck is my pastor and spiritual director. I admire and respect him dearly and have often thanked God for the father and mother who raised such an exceptional person. This will be a hard time of transition for the family. The Schreck Family will have a special place in my prayers during this time of change.

There are no words to express the significance of Mrs. Schreck on my life. As a student I learned so much. As her predecessor, I was so extremely grateful. I will be at the funeral mass celebrating the Legacy we are so grateful for!

I could never imagine Saint Vincent Academy, Savannah, or much less the world without Mrs. Schreck. I know there are many sisters and brothers out there who have been touched by her beautiful spirit of music and kind soul among other wonderful things she portrayed. She will be missed but I can hear her music playing on up in Heaven!

Nancy, Jerry, and Chris--I'm so sorry to hear of the loss of your mother. She was an inspiration to so many of us, but especially to those of us who are musicians. She started me on the organ at age 11 (sent me to Miss Addie Mae Jackson for lessons) and allowed me to play in the Cathedral for Novenas and SVA Masses in the Chapel downstairs as well as once in a while as a sub for Mass upstairs. All the SVA alums already in heaven will welcome here there with song, along with the saints and her siblings. I will be attending the Mass via Zoom (or however they do that) tomorrow afternoon.
- Nancy Hadsell, Austin, TX
Nancy, I am so sorry for the loss of your mother. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

Msgr. Chris, Msgr. Gerry and Nancy—Sending sympathy, prayers and love as you mourn the loss of your dear mother and as you celebrate her amazing life of sharing her talents with so many. What a beautiful and loving obituary. May your memories comfort you. God Bless the Schreck Family!
- Ginny Prusaczyk , Newark, OH
What a special lady your mother was here on earth! As one of her SVA students, I was disappointed when I didn’t make Chorale or Les Chanteurs. The good news is that I would still get to sing; I didn’t have a choice! We would ALL sing; and give it our ALL! I honor Mrs. Schreck daily by singing without holding back especially in church. On behalf of the Johnson Family, including my sisters (both of whom made Chorale), we are very proud to have been your mother’s students in our respective years at SVA.
- Joyce Johnson Hardwick, Atlanta, GA
Nancy, I am extending my deepest sympathy to you and your family in the loss of your beloved mom Mrs. Shreck. I know the loss is difficult because God gave her longevity and extensive time with the family. Time is a healer. Be blest as God ‘s “Footprints” will prevail in the days ahead as you make the adjustments for a mom who had an enjoyable life and lived it well. God makes no mistakes.
- Clara Elmore-Bain, Savannah , Georgia
Good morning Nancy …. I am so sorry to hear about your mother. She is my image of SVA! I know I was not the best singer in Chorale …. I will concede that Jan was the best! You have been a very loyal & loving daughter… as well as a friend to your mother! My heart goes out to you … cherish her memories & her beautiful voice! I am sure Miss Patty was met by all the heavens singing the Ave Maria! I love your earlier comment … imagine if all the SVA girls that Miss Patty taught were all singing! Love … Cathy Cathy Butler Gregory ‘71

Patricia Barragan Schreck. I heard that the name Barragan is Irish and/or Spanish, but I'm not sure. However, I am sure of three things about Patricia Barragan Schreck that I know for sure: First, I spoke with her one time. We talked about her brother Frank. He went to war and she prayed for him at the Catholic church located next to her school. She said that she was only a school girl at the time but she had faith that he would return home to their family and he did. Second, I know that there is a plaque in the narthex of that same Catholic church that carries her name and recognizes some of her accomplishments. I know that that plaque wold have to be quite a bit bigger to list all of them which means that she lived a very fruitful life. Third, I'm sure that Patricia was a loving daughter, sister, wife, mother and aunt and that she particularly loved her Catholic faith and loved that church, the Cathedral Basilica of Saint John the Baptist in Savannah Georgia. I do not know if she was married in that church but I do know that she will be remembered and celebrated in that church with a Catholic Right of Burial Mass. One other thing I do know, this past Wednesday January 1, 2025 was the Solemnity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Mother of God which is part of the Octave of Christmas and in that Holy Day Mass was the following reading: (From one mother to another.) Numbers 6:22-27 The LORD said to Moses: “Speak to Aaron and his sons and tell them: This is how you shall bless the Israelites. Say to them: The LORD bless you and keep you! The LORD let his face shine upon you, and be gracious to you! The LORD look upon you kindly and give you peace! So shall they invoke my name upon the Israelites, and I will bless them.” Have a blessed day because Patricia is certainly having one.
- Glen P Wayer, Raleigh, NC
I was thrilled to be picked to be part of Les Chanteur my senior year at SVA. I enjoyed Mrs. Schreck's chorus classes which probably served to prompt me to be very active in my home church choir at Bible Baptist Church in Savannah for years. I will never forget the sweet times we had and her patience with our classes. Her legacy of service will always be remembered (1973).
- Tina , Savannah, GA
Nancy, while you will likely not remember me, please know how welcoming and challenging your mom was during my 11 years as a Cathedral Women’s Choir and Deanery Choir member. Sometimes during rehearsals I’d think,”Patty is sweetness with a hickory switch.” But she did pull remarkable music from those of us with barely minimal talent. Every rehearsal and practice was both fun and instructive. And I remember how she relied on you. When I volunteered for Cathedral Music Ministry, Patty called me personally. I asked when I should come in for a try out. She laughed and said, “You just come Sunday and sit by my Nancy. She’ll assign you the right section after hearing you sing. “. None, like her, will come this way again.
- Pat Murrey, Canton , Tx
my sister Claire will be able to sing with her together from now on. God bless.
- Eileen’s Peterson Edgcomb , Reno, NV
I am so sorry for your loss, and for the passing of a wonderful woman. In my senior year at St Vincent’s, I lost my mother to cancer and Mrs. Schreck helped me so much thru that in a lot of ways. She was a strong, kind woman and I will never forget her. - Brion
- Brion Traub Ehret (1974), Savannah, Ga
Mrs Shreck I'm still smiling and singing "pick a little, talk a little" from the Music Man. You were so good to us and for us, your thousands of fans and students. See you when we all get to heaven! What a glorious chorus that will be.

Extending my sincere condolences to the Schreck and Barrigan Families on the loss of their angel. I had the opportunity and privilege to have been taught music by Mrs. Schreck from 1971-1975 being a member of Chorale! I had the best times with her as my instructor and so many awesome classmates!
